In 1993 HealthLink was the first organisation in the world to develop HL7 messaging for pathology and radiology report delivery on any significant scale. Today HealthLink delivers electronic pathology result messages to all of New Zealand 's General Practices and to a large proportion of Australia's.

In New Zealand HealthLink sends reports using the Health Level Seven (HL7) standard. In Australia, we use the Pathology Information Transfer (PIT) standard where required, but it is our preference to use the HL7 standard wherever it is possible to do so.

When using HL7, HealthLink is able to offer a system which provide application level acknowledgements; something that few other providers can offer. In addition to this, HL7 offers the ability to provide "atomic data"; data at a highly detailed level.

HealthLink has the largest Australian and New Zealand coverage of practices of any electronic clinical messaging service provider.
